A few years back, I established a little tradition of painting the bluebells en plein air. They were usually my first plein air piece for the year, as their appearance coincides with the warmer weather. What with one thing and another, and Open Studios happening in May, I haven’t managed to paint bluebells for several years.
Until this year, when I managed to get out in the woods with my painting gear on the 7th of May. Almost any other year, the woodland floor would have been carpeted with blue, but this year, after a mild winter and a warm spring, the plant kingdom is waking up early. I had missed the full effect while frantically tidying things up for Open Studios. But there were some flowers still out, and the big beech tree made a good focal point on the small, square canvas.
